Wall pack, flood or shoebox: exterior fixtures by the job

Exterior lighting goes wrong in a predictable way: one fixture type gets used for every outdoor job because it is the one that got specified last time. The three main types are not interchangeable, and the distinction is easy once you have seen the numbers next to each other.

Wall packs light the building's own perimeter

A wall pack mounts on the building and washes the wall and the ground directly around it. It is the fixture for doorways, loading areas, walkways beside the building and blank elevations.

Flood lights aim at something

A flood light is directional. You point it at a thing: a yard, a stack, a sign, a facade, a piece of equipment that has to be visible at night. Both flood families are compact, with an aluminium alloy body for heat dissipation and a treated glass cover.

The two families overlap on output and differ on housing size, so the choice usually comes down to the mounting detail and the space available.

Shoebox fixtures cover area from a pole

A shoebox is the pole-mounted fixture for open area — parking, yards, lots, driveways. It sits high, so its output is the largest of the three types by a wide margin.

Astoria is written as an alternative to High Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide, which is what most existing poles are still carrying.

Canopy lights are the fourth case

Anywhere with a soffit or a deck overhead — fuel canopies, drive-throughs, parking structures — takes a canopy fixture rather than any of the above.

Matching to what is already there

For a retrofit the quickest route is to inventory what is on the building and the poles now, note the type and the lamp wattage, and work from lumens rather than watts. An HPS or Metal Halide fixture and an LED fixture that replaces it will not be close on wattage, and that is the point.

Where IES photometric files are published — the two wall packs, the G6 flood and the Astoria shoebox all carry them — a layout can be modelled properly before poles are drilled or conduit is run. The canopy light and the G14 flood have none listed, so ask before you design around them.
